Sudanese drones killed more than 300 mourners as a huge typhoon bears down on Japan

The war in Sudan is killing civilians at a brutal new scale. Army drones struck mourners and a fuel market this week, killing more than 300 people (BBC, 21 Oct 2026). The same conflict has driven 33.7 million people into needing assistance in 2026 (OCHA). Meanwhile, typhoon Champi is forecast to reach Japan, with about 50.9 million people inside its forecast wind zone, up sharply from 33 million a day earlier (Watchfloor estimate on advisory 27, 20 Oct 2026). In Mali, fighting has surged to five times the normal daily rate (Watchfloor, 21 Oct 2026).

The Sudan attack shows the war is still intensifying, ten months after RSF forces took El Fasher and the UN found genocide against non-Arab communities there (UN Fact-Finding Mission, Feb 2026). Drought now stretches from Sudan and South Sudan through Ethiopia and the Sahel (GDACS, as of 21 Oct 2026), cutting harvests in the same countries the fighting is emptying. Emergency teams in Japan and Korea should finish evacuations and coastal preparations before Champi arrives. Agencies working in Sudan should re-route aid around North Kordofan, where the fuel market was hit.
