Aid cuts hit Gaza while war and famine squeeze the Horn of Africa and Yemen
Funding shortages are forcing the World Food Programme to cut aid to Gaza (BBC, 20 Oct 2026). The war between Israel and Hamas is in a fragile ceasefire that keeps breaking. At least 1,092 people have been killed by post-ceasefire Israeli strikes (Gaza Ministry of Health), and aid volumes have not recovered to levels before February 2026 (HRW, 19 May 2026). In Yemen, fighting on the West Coast displaced more people last week (IOM, 11-17 Oct 2026). In Mali, violence has surged to 8.5 times the usual daily level in the JNIM-Tuareg offensive, with all reviewed articles describing fresh fighting.
For Gaza's families, the aid cuts come while food insecurity remains fragile after famine was declared over in December 2025 (IPC). In Yemen, displaced families on the West Coast face fighting plus a collapsed economy. Sudan needs the most attention: 33.7 million people need assistance in 2026 (OCHA) amid a war with mass atrocities. Donors, especially Gulf and European governments, should close WFP's funding gap for Gaza and Yemen before winter, and agencies should pre-position food for Sudan's 2026 appeal. Neighbouring countries should keep corridors open for Sudanese and Malian refugees.
