Sudan's war deepens, Hormuz strangles food imports, and Cyclone Murasu nears India

Sudan's civil war is escalating with no signs of peace. Around 33.7 million people need assistance in 2026 (OCHA, 2026 HNRP), and organized violence killed 66,979 people in the year to 30 September 2026 (UCDP). The Rapid Support Forces still occupy El Fasher, where a UN mission found genocide against non-Arab communities in February 2026. Meanwhile the Iran-US-Israel war has cut Strait of Hormuz shipping to 3.3 ships a day (IMF PortWatch, week 19–25 Oct 2026), down 97 percent on a year earlier. Tropical cyclone Murasu now threatens India, with about 5 million people in strong winds (Watchfloor estimate on advisory 9, 2 Nov 2026).

The Hormuz collapse blocks the Gulf shipping lanes that carry grain to East Africa and South Asia, worsening food prices in countries already at war, including Sudan, Yemen and Ethiopia. Russian bombing killed 26 people at a Ukraine aid centre (GDACS, 3 Nov 2026, 00:00 UTC), showing aid workers themselves are targets. Displacement tracking in Yemen shows new movement on the west coast (IOM, 25–31 Oct 2026). Agencies in India should finish evacuations in Murasu's coastal districts before winds arrive. Gulf-importing countries need alternative grain routes arranged now, before prices climb further.
