Yemen's renewed war, Burkina Faso's spike and a Pacific typhoon shape today's crisis picture
Yemen's civil war is killing civilians again at a rising rate. Combat deaths over the past twelve months reached 1,644, up from 376 the year before (UCDP, to October 2026). UNFPA warned this week that 147,000 women and girls in the city of Taiz are at grave risk as fighting escalates (UNFPA, 15 October 2026). Meanwhile Burkina Faso recorded 30 violent events in a single day, twelve times its daily average, with JNIM still blockading the city of Djibo, where famine risk is credible (platform flash, 17 October 2026).
