Gulf war hits shipping as Yemen's war escalates and famine spreads across the Horn

A container ship has sunk in the Strait of Hormuz. BBC reported the ship was hit by a projectile (BBC, 15 Oct 2026). Iran's war with the United States and Israel has cut Hormuz traffic to roughly 15 transits a day, against about 110 before the war began in February. In Yemen, a Houthi missile hit a Saudi Aramco building after a coalition strike on a fuel depot (BBC, 15 Oct 2026). The World Food Programme says the fighting is cutting off aid to Taiz, a city of hundreds of thousands. Yemen's internal war killed 1,644 combatants in the past year (UCDP, to Oct 2026).

For people in East Africa and Yemen, the Gulf is where imported wheat, rice and fuel come from. Fewer ships and higher war-risk insurance raise the price of food in countries already in famine conditions. Some 33.7 million people in Sudan and over 18 million in Yemen need food aid to survive. Drought is gripping Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya and Sudan at the same time (GDACS, 15 Oct 2026). Kenya has also confirmed a second Ebola case (BBC, 15 Oct 2026). Aid agencies should pre-position food and fuel stocks in Yemen and the Horn before shipping costs climb further.
