Sudan's war kills civilians near Ethiopia as Gaza braces for winter without shelter

Sudan's RSF drone strike killed dozens near the Ethiopian border this week. A drone strike by Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces killed 41 people near the Ethiopian border this week (BBC, 11 Oct 2026). The war between the army and the RSF continues to escalate, with 33.7 million people needing assistance in 2026 (OCHA, 2026 HNRP). In Gaza, nearly 2 million people need urgent shelter help before winter (IOM, 10 Oct 2026), after a ceasefire that has held on paper since October 2025 but has been violated by continuing Israeli strikes. In Panama, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake damaged buildings on 9 October (USGS, 9 Oct 2026).

These crises compound each other. Drought now grips Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia and much of the Sahel, deepening the food emergencies those wars already cause. Yemen's civil war has re-escalated, with 18.3 million people acutely short of food (OCHA, 2026 HNRP). In eastern DR Congo, a Rwanda-backed armed group still holds Goma and Bukavu while an Ebola outbreak spreads. Agencies with stocks in East Africa should pre-position food and shelter before winter and the lean season close roads and ports.
