War, drought and empty treasuries push fifteen countries deeper into crisis

Wars are trapping hungry populations across three continents. Yemen's internal war re-escalated in July, with new displacement on the west coast reported as of 5 October 2026 (OCHA, 5 Oct 2026). In Sudan, the army-paramilitary war that produced a genocide finding (UN Fact-Finding Mission, Feb 2026) leaves 33.7 million people needing aid (OCHA, 2026 plan). Gaza's fragile ceasefire holds only on paper, with post-ceasefire strikes killing at least 1,092 people by 9 July 2026 (Gaza Ministry of Health). Drought now grips much of East Africa and Central America (GDACS, as of 7 Oct 2026).

These crises deepen one another. The Iran war cut Hormuz shipping from about 110 transits daily to roughly 15, strangling Gulf food and fuel imports that East African ports depend on. Kenya's first Ebola death (BBC, 7 Oct 2026) adds disease to a drought-struck region already hosting Sudanese and South Sudanese refugees. Aid agencies should pre-position food and medical stocks in Kenya and along Yemen's west coast before displaced families arrive, and donors should close funding gaps for Sudan's 2026 response now, while supply routes remain usable.
