War and hunger deepen from Gaza to Sudan as drought spreads across three continents
Civilians are bearing the heaviest toll in a widening band of wars. Fighting in Ethiopia's Tigray region killed 52 civilians in recent days (BBC, 1 Oct 2026). Russia launched its largest attack on Ukraine's power grid since spring (BBC, 1 Oct 2026), threatening heating and water for millions before winter. In Gaza, the October 2025 ceasefire holds only on paper: the Israeli military controls about 70 percent of the Strip, and post-ceasefire strikes had killed at least 1,092 people by 9 July (Gaza Ministry of Health, Jul 2026). Sudan's army-RSF war continues, with 33.7 million people needing aid this year (OCHA, 2026 HNRP).
These wars drive the same hunger. Drought now grips the Horn of Africa, the Sahel and the Caribbean (GDACS, as of 1 Oct 2026), and global food prices stay high, with vegetable oils at their costliest (FAO, Aug 2026). In Yemen, 18.3 million people are acutely food insecure (OCHA, 2026 HNRP) and 15,000 newly displaced people just reached camps (Norwegian Refugee Council, Sep 2026). Lebanon shows what truce without recovery means: four in five households cannot afford basic needs (UNICEF, Sep 2026). Aid agencies should pre-position food and fuel in Sudan, Tigray and Ukraine now, before winter and blockade tighten supply.
